Operation Walk Pittsburgh, a branch of a global health campaign bringing hope to many in need of orthopedic surgery, is led by Dr. Anthony DiGioia, and was formed in 2008.
Since Operation Walk Pittsburgh's inaugural international trip in August of 2009 to Antigua, Guatemala, the Pittsburgh team has performed 242 surgeries on 195 patients in three countries. The team returned to Guatemala in 2010 then traveled to Panama in 2011 and Honduras in 2012. Each year a team of over 50 volunteers is assembled with surgeons, anesthesiologists, physical therapists, medical technicians, nurses, sponsor representatives and dedicated family members. These trips not only serve as a way to Grant the Wish to Walk but also as an educational training opportunity to help better the skills of medical professionals worldwide.
In addition to international efforts, Operation Walk Pittsburgh is committed to serving the local community. Thanks to the support of two area hospitals—Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC and Butler Memorial Hospital, the team is able to reach more patients than ever before in need of hip and knee replacement surgery. Each of the patients receives free surgery as well as rehabilitation to begin their new lives.
Operation Walk is a private, not-for-profit, volunteer medical service organization that provides free surgical treatment for patients in developing countries and in the United States who have no access to life-improving care for arthritis or other debilitating bone and joint conditions. Operation Walk also educates in-country orthopedic surgeons, nurses, physical therapists and other healthcare professionals on the most advanced treatments and surgical techniques for diseases of the hip and knee joints. This is done in conjunction with surgeries and other humanitarian efforts to help create a lasting contribution to patient care in developing countries.
